  • Đọc chơi: Health does not always come from medicine. Most of the time it comes from peace of mind, peace in heart, peace in the soul. It comes from laughter and love.

Enlightened One; Buddha
Buddha : The enlightened/awakened one
A VIETNAMESE SANCTUARY IN THE LAND OF BUDDHA *From the editor: The author, currently the Director of Commission for Foreign Affairs of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, was the First Secretary of the Vietnamese Embassy in India. The sky was blue and cloudless as I stepped off a train at the Bodhgaya station in the Indian state of Bihar and boarded a horse-drawn carriage to my destination 13 kilometres away. I was on hallowed land. At a distance, I could already see Bồ Đề Đạo Tràng (the Mahabodi -- a Buddhist school) and the Kim Cương Toà (the temple of Vajracchedika Sutra) with its towering four-faced stupas. The carriage moved slowly past a succession of pagodas from different countries: Nepal, Japan, Burma, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Tibet. The word was that UNESCO planned to recognise this place as a world cultural heritage. A line of red Vietnamese letters incised on the wall of a bell tower of a three-storied building proclaimed Việt Nam Phật Quốc Tự (Vietnam Buddhist Monastery). On the wall was a map of Vietnam in bas-relief. I had reached my destination. The person responsible for building a pagoda in the land of the Buddha, head bonze Huyền Diệu, received me. A native of Long Thành, Đồng Nai province, southern Vietnam, Diệu attended a Buddhist college and obtained a doctorate in theology from France. His profound knowledge of Buddhist sutras and fluency in many foreign languages won him a reputation and invitations to deliver lectures in many universities in Japan, Western Europe, and North America. Diệu's mind, however, was set on India, the birthplace of the founder of his faith, and building a Vietnamese-styled pagoda there. With his savings and the money donated by Vietnamese Buddhists all over the world, he managed to purchase land and building materials. It was after nearly two decades of sustained efforts that his goal came into being in 1992. He had stayed in a Burmese pagoda on his arrival in India. The venerable Huyền Diệu invites visitors to the pagoda to stay there for three days at no cost, and visit all the sacred places here. Apart from comfortable rooms named after patriotic Vietnamese followers of the Buddha (like martyrs Quách Thị Trang, and Thích Quảng Đức who made the supreme sacrifice in the anti-US war), the guests are offered rice, fruits and vegetables grown in the pagoda's premises. Kitchen appliances including gas stoves, pots and pans are also placed at the disposal of the guests. When I asked him about the map of Vietnam in bas-relief which left a deep impression on me, the head bonze said that it was intended for blind and dim-sighted pilgrims. They can touch the bas-relief map and know that they are visiting a Vietnamese pagoda. During my three days' stay at the pagoda, Huyền Diệu was kind enough to show me around the neighbourhood. The 2,500 year-old Bodhi tree in whose shade Prince Siddhartha had sat in meditation and attained enlightenment, moves visitors to reverence. Back "home", I was shown the scheme of the pagoda displayed in the "drawing room". In the courtyard, foundations had been laid to build a replica of the One-Pillar pagoda in Hà Nội . It was planned that a three-entrance portico would be built and big rocks would be brought to the pagoda to make miniature mounts, and celebrated poems in Chinese under Nhà Hậu Lý and Nhà Trần (between 11th-15th centuries) would be incised on the stones. In the evening of the third day, I was moved to tears as I heard the sounds of the vespers in the countryside of India that emanated from the prayer room. They reminded me of the Vietnamese pagodas I visited in Vietnam. As I knelt behind the head bonze and listened to his prayers, my heart filled with emotions, and I realised the full meaning of the words "mercy" and "self-denial". Huyền Diệu offered me a dry leaf from the Bodhi tree that had witnessed Buddha's enlightenment. As he bade farewell to me, he said , "Please tell our fellow-countrymen in Vietnam that Việt Nam Phật Quốc Tự has been built for all the Vietnamese people, not simply for Vietnamese believers; that the gate of the pagoda is always open to all visitors from Vietnam; that vegetarian meals will be served for the three days that would give them time to visit all the holy spots in the land of Buddha". His dedication, generosity and kindness came to mind as I placed the Bodhi leaf on the altar at home in Vietnam. (VNS)
